Tummy Time Workshop Adelaide
Tummy time is one of the simplest things you can do to help your baby build strength, confidence and the skills they need to move.
If you’ve ever put your baby on their tummy only to be met with an immediate cry, grizzle or dramatic face of betrayal, you’re not alone!
Tummy time can take some getting used to, especially in those early weeks.
The good news?
It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to happen all at once.

What exactly is tummy time?

Tummy time simply means giving your baby some supervised time on their tummy while they are awake.
It gives babies the opportunity to work muscles that they don't use as much when lying on their back.
As they grow, these muscles help support important developmental milestones such as lifting and controlling their head, rolling, reaching, sitting, crawling and eventually getting up and moving around. Think of tummy time as your baby's first little workout!

Why is tummy time so important?

Babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs, and for good reason. Babies should always be placed on their backs for sleep.
But when they're awake and supervised, spending some time on their tummy helps provide variety and encourages them to:
● Build strength through their neck, shoulders and upper back
● Develop head and neck control
● Strengthen their arms and hands
● Develop the muscles needed for rolling, sitting and crawling
● Practise shifting their weight and reaching
● Explore their environment from a different position
● Develop coordination and body awareness
Tummy time also gives your baby an opportunity to learn how to move against gravity, an important part of their physical development.
"But my baby hates tummy time!"
This is probably one of the most common things parents tell us.
And honestly? It can be hard!
Being placed on their tummy can feel unfamiliar and challenging for a young baby. They may not yet have the strength to lift their head comfortably, so they can quickly become frustrated.
If your baby isn't a fan, don't give up. Instead, start small and make it enjoyable.
Try tummy time:
On your chest
Lie back comfortably and place your baby tummy-down on your chest.
Your face is right there, which can make it much more interesting, and reassuring, for them.
With a favourite toy
Get down on the floor with your baby and place a toy, book or your face in front of them.
Your encouragement can make a big difference.
Little and often
You don't need to aim for one long tummy-time session.
A few short sessions throughout the day can be much more manageable, particularly for a baby who isn't a fan.
Remember: some tummy time is better than none, and gradually building tolerance is the goal.
Tummy time does not have to look Instagram-perfect!

There can be a lot of pressure on parents to get everything "right."
But your baby's tummy time might look more like:
30 seconds of tummy time → crying → cuddle → try again later. And that's okay.
You don't need fancy equipment, a perfectly curated play space or a baby who happily spends 20 minutes on their tummy.
What matters is giving your baby
regular, supervised opportunities to move, explore and build strength.
A little encouragement goes a long way
Get down on the floor with your baby. Talk to them. Smile at them. Sing. Make silly faces. Put a favourite toy in front of them.
Your baby doesn't know they're exercising, they just know they're spending time with you and those little moments add up.
Remember
Back to sleep. Tummy to play.
Always place your baby on their back for sleep and provide tummy time only when they are awake and closely supervised.
