About Philip

Our Remedial Massage Therapist, Philip, has worked in Elite Sports and many Allied Health Clinics before returning to Winston Avenue to work with his local community. He brings a range of expertise, having completed a Diploma of Remedial Massage in 2017 and further certifications in Myofascial Cupping, Dry Needling, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Sports Training and Advanced Sports Taping.

Having suffered significant hip pain as a result of competitive powerlifting training, Philip became encouraged to learn more about the impact of pain and limited mobility. Remedial Massage and Chiropractic care allowed him to work, exercise and live freely again. That passion and willingness to learn soon became a career.

Philip has earned a reputation through providing excellent care both locally, and at the highest level.
Working with elite athletes, local teams and even the AFL through the Port Adelaide Football Club.

  • What inspired you to become a Remedial Masseuse?

I’d had really great experiences with Remedial Massage and bodywork through Rowing and Powerlifting. I’d had problems with Trapezius tightness not allowing me to Bench Press or Squat. Whether it was recovering after hard races or keeping my body going after some gruelling weight training cycles it helped immensely.

I’d done a little massage to help friends and other competitors but after having a therapist not show up to an appointment I’d booked, I thought to myself “well at least I could show up”. I then trained as a Remedial Massage Therapist and haven’t looked back. By the time I’d completed my training I was already working for Port Power and was loving my career.

  • What’s a common condition you treat, and how can Remedial Massage help?

Shoulder and Neck Issues respond very well to Remedial Massage. Sometimes rotator cuff issues aren’t taken into account when dealing with a tight neck, shoulders or upper back. People will get massage/bodywork for these and only have a few days of relief before issues reoccur. Having a better understanding of how these muscles and systems all work together can mean lasting relief and the ability to give the areas the ‘space’ they need to function correctly.

  • Do you have any tips for maintaining spinal health at home or at work?

Being able to keep good posture while not having to work too hard to do so is important. Remedial Massage can help your body keep a strong posture while not working too hard to do so.

  • How is Remedial Massage tailored during pregnancy or postpartum?

We tailor the Remedial Treatment to where each individual is in their pregnancy and how their body is changing. Some women are having more trouble in certain areas of their body than others. Sometimes it’s restless legs or tight calves, upper or lower back or something more complex over a variety of areas. It’s important to understand their issues and consult with them.

  • What’s something people are often surprised to learn about Remedial Massage?

Anyone can call themselves a masseuse or a massage therapist. To call yourself a Remedial Massage Therapist, you have to undertake the correct training, have a membership with a massage association and stay up to date with continued education to maintain your membership.

  • What do you enjoy most about working at Chiropractic on Winston?

The amazing clients I see every day. It’s so nice to come into the clinic and know everyone you’re working on that day is an awesome human being. It makes it easy to do my job and communicate well with clients.

  • What’s your favourite part of being a Remedial Masseuse?

Sometimes people you might have been treating for a while open up about how treatment is helping in their day to day lives. You don’t often realise what you’ve helped them with was actually a massive block for them while exercising or even just doing their work day-to-day. It’s very humbling at times.

  • What’s one piece of advice you find yourself giving all the time?

Book in with our Chiropractors! Chiropractic and Remedial Massage works so well together, and we have an amazing team. Your body will thank you.

  • Do you have a favourite area of the body to treat - or a condition you love helping with?

Anything that someone has been really struggling with or has had trouble finding effective treatment. Helping people get back on track is incredibly rewarding.

  • What’s your go-to way to unwind after a busy day in the clinic?

Spending time with my beautiful wife and my amazing baby boy.

  • If you weren’t a Remedial Masseuse, what do you think you’d be doing?

I’m currently in love with hemp homes so maybe doing something with that? Otherwise, I just love what I do

  • What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Chiropractic Care / Remedial Massage?

Just how quickly Chiropractic Care can help with issues. Sometimes issues can be more complex but anecdotally the changes I’ve seen in people and seen in myself when I’ve had issues has just been incredible.

  • What’s the most exciting part of your career that’s happened so far?

Being able to work in my local community. It really is the best.

  • What’s your go-to lunch on a busy clinic day?

Chicken Caesar wrap from Becks Bakery or a Panini from Friends With Florence.

  • What’s something on your bucket list?

Visiting Greece for a few months. Something we were supposed to do on our honeymoon but COVID and now a baby got in the way!

  • What’s your favourite way to move your body outside of work?

Gym, Powerlifting, Pilates. I’d love to get back into running and cycling as well but I need to set time in my week to do so.

FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions By Philip

  • What is a Remedial Massage Therapist?

A Remedial Massage Therapist is a trained professional who specialises in assessing, treating, and preventing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction through hands-on massage techniques. Our goal is to address specific issues in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue, improving your overall mobility, function, and well-being.

  • What Treatments Do You Provide?

Remedial massage therapy treatments can benefit people of all ages and all activity levels.

We help treat common conditions like:

Muscle Tension and Stiffness: Caused by poor posture, overuse, or inactivity.

Sports Injuries: Strains, sprains, and recovery from physical activity.

Chronic Pain Conditions: Back pain, neck pain, and sciatica.

Postural Imbalances: Work-related tension from sitting or repetitive movements.

Stress and Anxiety: Massage can promote relaxation and improve mental well-being.

Headaches and Migraines: Often linked to tension in the neck and shoulders.

  • How Does Myofascial Cupping Work?

Myofascial cupping is a therapeutic technique that combines traditional cupping methods with modern myofascial release principles to relieve tension, reduce pain, and improve mobility. Unlike traditional cupping, which is primarily used for detoxification and circulation, myofascial cupping focuses on releasing restrictions in the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs).
