Back pain in children and adolescents

Did you know that Low back pain in childhood/adolescence is a significant risk factor for low back pain in adulthood?

If this was occuring how would your child present? Usually they’d complain requently with a diffuse, poorly localised pain on the back.

You may notice Your child complaining about having a sore back alot and when asked they can’t tell you where the pain is.

back pains are More common in-

  • Girls
  • With increasing age
  • With High and low levels of activity
  • During periods of rapid growth
  • Youth participating in sports requiring flexion / extension / rotation of the spine

However, most cases of back pain are non-specific and self-limiting.

This means it should go away on its own, however, we don’t know how long it would take to get better

so What can you do as a parent?

Take them to your chiropractor for a spinal check and assessment

Although it is not well documented, Back pain is common in paediatrics with one year prevalence rates varying from 7% to 58% with a lifetime prevalence of 70-80% by 20 years old.

The Australian College of Chiropractic Paediatrics represents chiropractors with a minimum 2 years of post-graduate training in paediatrics. The ACCP was established in 2016 to promote evidence-based care of infants and children by chiropractors and to improve the level of paediatric training within the chiropractic profession.
